More about Content
Making basic 3D graphic Content is not particularly difficult given some training and the correct software. Indeed there are number of agencies across the internet that will produce and / or host Content. However, true BIM s a concept that is not very wide, but is extremely deep.
We know that BIM is not really about graphics, it’s about data management and transfer into a useable format. Once you start to scratch the surface of the subject matter it becomes extremely complex, and as with any developing technology it’s become very useable as long as you understand the limitations of current software and have an eye on future development. There is more about issues with BIM later, but to grasp the basics we need a better understanding of what makes Content work properly.
As computer hardware lags behind its ability to run many of the bulky, memory hungry files demanded by modern software applications on large projects, 3D models can soon become unmanageable for the computer operator due to the vast amount of data contained within the 3D model itself. It’s important to recognize what detail in graphic or data is relevant to what Work Stage a project is at in order to optimize the usability of your ‘range’ of Content. What is known as ‘Levels of Detail’ assist us in deciding when product specific Content should be introduced to a model rather than simpler ‘Generic Content’ which will not necessarily be product or manufacturer specific.
This choice means that a user can draw down the specific information they need, when they need it, and without a massive file to contend with.
More about Levels of Detail will be described in BS 1192.
